The first BattleBots tournament was held August 14-15, 1999 at Cal State Long Beach's Pyramid arena. There was no Superheavyweight class, and the event was not televised.

The tournament structure was unique for BattleBots due to the inclusion of a "Loser's Bracket" that offered competitors a second chance.
